Routines

Over the past week or so I've really come to realize how much society relies upon routines.  Sure, we all love a little spontaneity from time to time, but throw a wrench into routine and it's all kind of shot to hell.

My life for example. I have pretty much the same morning routine.  Get up, take a shower, turn on the Today Show, get dressed, make my lunch and head on out to work.  Pretty simple right?  Well my sister was staying with me for the week, which led to me changing my routine in an effort not to wake her up.  Day 1 of this I was all thrown off, but then I eventually fell into you guessed it, another routine.

I'm an accountant - one of the most routine occupations around.  I know during which weeks I'll be busiest and which ones are ideal for a vacation (yay 5 week months!).  But throw in a systems issue and the whole department is in a tizzy.  Even when I worked retail, there was the normal cycle of business which set our routines.

How about driving?  There's fog - everyone must drive at 20mph.  If there's a snow flake, forget it.  And let's be sure to slow down and examine the car pulled over on the side of the road due to a flat tire.
I think anyone that says they hate routine isn't being 100% truthful.  It's that sense of comfort that we all love.  I like knowing that I'll see some cheesy news story during the 7:00 hour of the Today Show (I mean really.  I rarely get real news...).

Are we creatures of habit or creatures of comfort?
